AMD Gains Share as Graphics-Card Sales Rise

Advanced Micro Devices stole a bit of market share away from rival Intel in graphics add-on cards during the second quarter, a report revealed Wednesday. In total, graphics card sales rose slightly from the previous quarter, but still fell sharply from a year ago. Jon Peddie Research used the data to conclude that the PC recession was ending, as others have. About 16.81 million cards were sold during the second quarter, JPR found, up 3.0 percent sequentially. Still, that's down 15 percent from a year ago. As recently as the fourth quarter of 2007, card sales topped 26.5 million units. AMD, meanwhile, rode positive price-performance evaluations to notch a four-point gain in market share, rising to 35 percent. Nvidia's share fell by the same amount, to 64 percent. Not surprisingly, low-cost cards showed the most growth.
