The two processor manufacturing giants in the PC industry today, Intel Corp. (NASDAQ:INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) have been taking different approaches to release their processor line-ups for the past few years, particularly in the mainstream-line of the industry. Intel has always concentrated on a large line-up with processors each having very little variations, down right to a 100MHz difference between two processors, while slowly building up on the features and graphics processing.
In contrast, AMD approaches the market with a different tactic, by only releasing a handful of models every quarter; base models first, and then filling up the mid and high points of its line-up. The recently released A10-7870K was the first in AMD’s new line-up called Kaveri refresh and the A8-7670K was the second processor in this line-up.
Anandtech quoted Kaveri refresh as a better production method, which results in better frequency, and other characteristics. It says that the A10-7870K has a minor voltage bump of 0.05 volt, which accounts for the extra frequency, but due to the improved production method, the Thermal Design Power(TDP) remains the same at 95W. The second processor in the line-up, the A8-7670K boasts an improvement on the base-frequency with an extra 300 MHz and an additional 100 MHz on turbo. This is coupled with a 37MHz increase on the graphics processor, with an impressive TDP of 95W.
Since AMD is not working on any new line-up for Microsoft Corporation’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows 10, the Kaveri refresh is going to be its main focus, and because of this reason, the press release from AMD talks a lot about Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture from the manufacturer.
