Nintendo is reportedly developing an Android tablet

Hopes of a Game & Watch revival raised
By Chris Merriman Nov 20 2013

JAPANESE GAMES CONSOLE MAKER Nintendo is licking its wounds following a disappointing launch for its "misunderstood" successor to the record smashing Wii, the Wii U. However it could be that the beleaguered manufacturer already has a plan B in the works, if an employee Twitter feed is to be believed, and it isn't what anyone will expect. According to tweets from Nintendo America developer Nando Montezaro, the company is experimenting with an Android device, a tablet to be precise, aimed at the educational market. The tweets, now deleted but dated 18 November, were collected and catalogued by fanblog Nintendo Everything.

"Experimenting with a tablet of Nintendo, the system is based on Android, fully modified and unified as a database of the tablet. #Android
"Nintendo is testing only the 'Android' but in fact she wants a system written in C/C++ in a Unix environment for the system single tablet!
"Many people will be wondering if games 'Nes', 'SNES' or 'Game Boy' the tablet will not have these games, educational games only! #Tablet"

Montezaro went on to explain that although core characters from the Nintendo franchises would put in appearances, the scope of the tablet is limited to education, so the odds on seeing Mario Kart for Android remain at zero.

As the tweets point out, the Android tablet is a conduit to a system written in C/C++, so it might be that the finished product, if it ever emerges, will be unrecognisable to Android fans, but if true it's an interesting change of direction after a challenging year for the firm.
