Beats Apple to it

KOREAN ELECTRONICS GIANT Samsung unveiled the long rumoured Galaxy Gear smartwatch at IFA in Berlin on Wednesday. Confirming the abundance of rumours that have been hovering around for the last few months, Samsung's wearable device features a 1.6in 320x320 OLED display that acts as a second screen for owners of Samsung Galaxy devices. For example, notifications for things such as emails and text messages will pop up on the watch, saving users from having to dig their phones out of their bags. As expected, there's a 1.9MP camera integrated into the watch, complete with a feature called Memographer that is designed so that users can take visual memos. Voice Memos are also included on the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, with the built-in speaker also enabling users to answer calls from their wrist and operate the device using voice commands. Powered by an 800MHz processor with 512MB of RAM, the Galaxy Gear will run the latest version of the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean mobile operating system, albeit with the keyboard feature turned off. Perhaps surprisingly, Samsung announced that there will be plenty of apps compatible with the device from launch, including Runkeeper, eBay and Evernote.
