I think the saying goes that those that don’t learn from history are destined to repeat it. This is likely to point with Apple this month as they sit stunned that Windows 7 is doing so well and they are left looking foolish with products priced out of the segment. Their big news this week was a couple of PCs, a new keyboard and a multi-touch mouse. This last will likely go down in history as one of the lamest devices yet as they should know, given the iPhone, that touch is connected to the screen and not anything else. They likely would have done better putting fir on the damn thing and building it to fart the star spangled banner at least that would have been patriotic. Apple is clearly one of the strongest marketing companies in any industry and Steve Jobs is a considered to be a master while Microsoft in recent years hasn’t really seemed to be in their league. This goes to the core, no pun intended, of how Microsoft blindsided Apple and left the firm looking like they had given the PC market back to Microsoft. The other part is that Apple is now fighting on two fronts against two powerful companies for the first time since the 80s. Let’s talk about this while we think of that poor challenged Apple mouse.

AMD joins Windows 7 launch party
By Aharon Etengoff, October 22, 2009
AMD has congratulated Microsoft on the official launch of its long-awaited Windows 7 operating system. According to AMD spokesperson Margaret Lewis, the two industry heavyweights "closely collaborated" on the optimization of both hardware and software for the new OS. "There are three major areas that AMD closely collaborated with Microsoft to optimize our products for Windows 7," Lewis told TG Daily. "Graphics, virtualization, and power management." Lewis explained that AMD had worked with Microsoft to accelerate the performance of various graphic platforms. "We wanted to ensure the best possible experience for the consumer market," said Lewis. "For example, DirectX 11 is one area where the AMD processor will really shine. Our DirectX 11 capabilities will accelerate the visual computing experience for both gaming environments and professional 3D digital content creation." Lewis noted that AMD and Microsoft had also cooperated in designing processors to support the advanced virtualization options offered in Windows 7.

Galleon SEC, FBI Informant Roomy Khan Worked at Intel
By Katherine Burton and Saijel Kishann Oct. 22, 2009
Roomy Khan, the informant who is cooperating with prosecutors in the insider-trading case against Galleon Group LLC co-founder Raj Rajaratnam, previously worked at Intel Corp., according to two people who know her. Information provided by Khan was central to the investigation that led to the arrests of six people, according to a person familiar with the probe, who asked not to be identified because Khan’s name wasn’t disclosed by the government. Khan’s link to Intel is significant because it shows that Rajaratnam may have had more than one inside source at the Santa Clara, California-based semiconductor maker. Khan, identified by a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission complaint as “Tipper A,” is a hedge-fund manager who worked for Galleon in the 1990s and sought to rejoin Rajaratnam in late 2005 when facing financial difficulties, according to the agency’s complaint. The Wall Street Journal first reported Khan’s identity yesterday. Khan is identified in the criminal case as “CW,” for cooperating witness.
