For a chip company, AMD is pushing a curious but refreshing strategy. The No. 2 chipmaker is embarking on a marketing campaign in which it is de-emphasizing its chips in favor of appealing to how consumers will actually use the computer. With the new "Vision Technology from AMD" campaign, the Sunnyvale company will spend less time talking about CPU clock speeds and more about what people can do with its processors and graphic cards. This addresses the confusion that many consumers feel as they enter a Best Buy and are bombarded with specifications that often don't answer the basic question: What can I do with this computer? AMD believes the marketing push, and working with retail partners to train their associates, will help consumers get over the intimidation and confusion. And, of course, AMD hopes that translates into a purchase. There will be three classifications assigned to computers using AMD chips: Vision Basic, Vision Premium and Vision Ultimate, which will replace the more than 20 categories AMD now uses.

Apple Releases Update for Snow Leopard
By: Nathan Eddy 2009-09-11
Apple's update for the Snow Leopard OS, 10.6.1, addresses a variety of compatibility issues. Just two weeks after its launch, Apple quietly released an update for its latest operating system (OS) Snow Leopard, with 10.6.1, which addresses a security concern as well as stability and compatibility issues. The update includes fixes for compatibility with some Sierra Wireless 3G modems, an issue that might cause DVD playback to stop unexpectedly, printer compatibility driver issues and an issue that might make it difficult to remove an item from the Dock. The update also resolves an issue in which the Command-Option-T keyboard shortcut would sometimes bring up the special characters menu in applications such as Mail and TextEdit, addresses instances in which auto account setup in Mail might not work, fixes issues when sending mail with certain SMTP servers, addresses an issue in which Motion 4 could become unresponsive and includes an update to Adobe Flash Player plug-in version 10.0.32.18.

Sony, Microsoft Boost Their U.S. Game Sales in August
By Rob Golum and Mariko Yasu September 11, 2009
Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. sold more game consoles in August after they cut prices, helping ease the overall decline in the U.S. video-game market. August sales of Sony’s PlayStation 3 console gained 13 percent from a year earlier, the first increase in 10 months, and those of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 rose 10 percent, researcher NPD Group Inc. said in a statement yesterday. Total U.S. revenue from hardware, software and accessories fell 16 percent to $908.7 million, NPD said. That’s smaller than the 29 percent decline in July and a 31 percent slump in June. Sony cut the price of the PS3 by 25 percent on Aug. 19 and Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft lowered the price of its most powerful console, the Xbox 360 Elite, by a similar proportion to $300 on Aug. 27. The cheaper players will likely spur software sales, further slowing down the contraction of the market later this year, said Koki Shiraishi, an analyst at Daiwa Institute of Research Ltd.
