Most of the PC vendors Google listed on its blog as partners for the new Chrome operating system say they're evaluating the software but have not committed to creating devices around it, a far less upbeat message than Google had portrayed. "We are studying Chrome," said Hewlett-Packard media relations officer Marlene Somsak, by e-mail. "We want to assess the capability Chrome may have for the computer and communications industries, and so we are studying it." HP, the world's largest PC vendor, said that most of its products use Microsoft operating systems today, including Windows Mobile, XP and Vista. The company also sells machines with Linux for some computing customers.

Microsoft takes on Adobe with Silverlight 3
By Emma Woollacott Friday, July 10, 2009
In a challenge to Adobe Flash, Microsoft has released its new web multimedia player Silverlight 3, a browser plug-in enabling audio, vector graphics and animation. The company says it allows streaming of high-definition video in full screen with stutter-free live and on-demand video. It supports Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8, Firefox 2 and 3 and Safari 3 and 4 browsers - but not Opera or Chrome. There are a number of improvements over the previous version, including Smooth Screening, which automatically provides the best quality video possible for the network and local PC connections - allowing instant playback of HD video for those with a high-badwidth connection and powerful hardware. It allows streaming of 720p HD content over the web with the ability to pause and rewind a live stream.

LaCie launches rugged hard drive aimed at film lovers
By Matthew Humphries Jul. 10, 2009
While Freecom is attempting to attract the security conscious with its external hard drive controlled by an RFID card, LaCie is targeting the mobile movie lover with its latest drive. The LaCie LaCinema Rugged HD is an external hard drive designed to take a beating. The casing is scratch-resistant aluminium and the drive inside is surrounded by shock absorbers. In terms of storage you get 500GB and there doesn’t seem to be any option to increase that size with other models. The drive does have another feature that makes it very attractive to users who want to watch movies and in HD. That feature is a HDMI connection meaning you can plug it directly into the back of a TV and start watching content at 1080p. It can playback anything in H.264, MKV, WMV9, or MPEG-4 formats and LaCie believe the drive will hold 700 movies. The interface of the hard drive has been setup to allow easy access to media through a TV and it also ships with a useful remote to control playback.
