AMD Phenom II 955 BE Hits 7.0GHz

By Ionut Arghire, 7th of July 2009

Sunnyvale-based Advanced Micro Devices wants to show the world that its processors are capable of breaking the world records when it comes to their overclocking capabilities. As such, the company sponsored an overclocking event in Finland, where its AMD Phenom II 955 Black Edition processor was pushed up to the impressive speed of 7.0GHz, a figure that might become a new world record in case the results are validated. Previously, this processor was brought to speeds of 6.5GHh, 6.7GHz and 6.88GHz, and this time it managed to best its own performance. The most attractive part in this equation is the fact that we are talking a processor that is available for purchase at any retail store, the AMD Phenom II 955 Black Edition, though we should mention that the chip was cooled down using liquid helium, something that you won't find for purchase that easily.

Twitter becoming a tool for scams, bureau says

By Tiffany Hsu July 7, 2009

Online predators have hit on social media site Twitter as the latest tool to lure victims into get-rich-quick and work-at-home schemes, according to the Better Business Bureau. After tracking years of scams involving e-mail and Google, the bureau is seeing a surge in the number of companies claiming to help people turn Twitter into a virtual ATM with little effort and no risk, said spokeswoman Alison Southwick. "Twitter is the cool thing, the bright, shiny object," she said Monday. "It's unbelievable how widespread this is. And with so many people vulnerable and looking for jobs, a scheme like this is going to have people falling for it when they can least afford to." The messaging site allows participants to post, or "tweet," short updates that subscribers, or "followers," can read. Recent schemes involve companies promising to pay Twitter users hundreds of dollars a day to tweet after they sign up for a free training kit, which the bureau said ends up sucking away a hefty monthly payment.

Microsoft Warns Of Browse And Get Owned Attack

By Thomas Claburn July 7, 2009

Microsoft on Monday issued a security advisory about a zero-day vulnerability in the Microsoft Video ActiveX Control. The flaw could allow a remote unauthenticated attacker to execute malicious code on computers running Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server. "A browse-and-get-owned attack vector exists," acknowledged Microsoft security engineer Chengyun Chu on the company's Security Research & Defense blog. "A user needs to be lured to navigate to a malicious Web site or a compromised legitimate Web site to be affected. No further user interaction is needed." And legitimate Web sites may be compromised merely by hosting content submitted by users. Such content or advertisements could be crafted to exploit the Video ActiveX Control vulnerability.
