Microsoft Corp is getting ready to unveil a long-anticipated free anti-virus service for personal computers that will compete with products sold by Symantec Corp and McAfee Inc. A Microsoft spokesman said on Wednesday that the world's biggest software maker is testing an early version of the product with its own employees. Microsoft would "soon" make a trial version, or product beta, available via its website, he added, but declined to provide a specific date. Symantec shares fell 0.5 percent on Nasdaq and McAfee fell 1.3 percent on the New York Stock Exchange, while Microsoft was up 2.1 percent. The Nasdaq composite index .IXIC was down 0.47 percent. Investors are closely monitoring the free service, code-named Morro after Brazil's Morro de Sao Paolo beach, amid concern it could hurt sales of products from Symantec and McAfee, which generate billions of dollars of revenue a year protecting Windows PCs from attacks by hackers.

Globalfoundries, AMD's fab spin-off, has officially pledged to start construction of New-York-state plant targeting bleeding-edge 32nm and smaller-process silicon. The company said Tuesday it sent a formal commitment letter to the state of New York for the construction of Fab 2 facilities at the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Saratoga County, New York. Globalfoundries' missive officially initiates the construction phase of the plant, as well as lets the state know its time to start issuing bonds to pay for development of the $4.2bn plant. Fab 2 compliments Globalfoundries' cornerstone wafer bakery, Fab 1, in Dresden, Germany. The company reckons Fab 2 will be the world's first 300mm fab designed for 32nm technologies and the largest economic development project in the history of New York state.

IPhone 3G S Features 7.2 Mbps, AT&T's Network Doesn't

The iPhone 3G S unveiled by Apple Monday has the latest of everything, including 7.2 HSPA, the fastest mobile broadband flavor currently available for U.S. 3G networks. This updated 3G network might nearly triple the top downstream rate of its predecessor. The only trouble with the faster speed? AT&T hasn't rolled it out yet. While dozens of carriers worldwide have put the 7.2 Mbps flavor of HSPA in the field, AT&T is still in the planning stages. The firm has a vaguely stated schedule in place. The company said a few days before the iPhone 3G S was announced that 7.2 HSPA would start appearing on cell towers "later this year." However, the full upgrade of AT&T's 3G network won't be complete until some time in 2011.
