by computer technology review 08 June 2009

Bringing its 45 nm technology to new high-volume processor designs, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) announced two new dual-core desktop processors. Building on the AMD Athlon processor technology, the new 45 nm AMD Athlon II X2 250 processor gives mainstream consumers high performance, efficiency and value. For enthusiasts and overclockers, AMD also announces the AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition processor, a dual-core AMD Phenom II CPU. With this latest addition to the AMD Phenom II processor family, users can experience the power of AMD platform technology, codenamed “Dragon,” with dual-, triple- and quad-core configurations. The AMD Athlon II X2 250 performs well when combined with AMD chipsets and integrated graphics solutions to create an all-AMD platform. Platforms featuring all-AMD technology can deliver up to twice the graphics performance of those with Intel integrated graphics. Windows 7 is optimized for multi-core processors like AMD Athlon II processors to give consumers an amazingly fast, simple and engaging PC experience. AMD power management technologies, in combination with Windows 7, can help OEMs (original equipment manufactures) and partners to build green, cool and quiet PCs.

By Paul McDougall June 8, 2009

Consumers who purchase a Vista-based computer on or after June 26 will be allowed to upgrade to Windows 7 for free, according to a leaked corporate memo from electronics retailer Best Buy. The memo states that Best Buy (and presumably its competitors) will launch a "Technology Guarantee" program on June 26, under which anyone who purchases a PC running Vista Home Premium, Business, or Ultimate can install Windows 7 at no extra charge when the latter becomes available Oct. 22. Best Buy also will launch pre-sales of Windows 7 on June 26, according to the memo—which was first obtained by tech blog Engadget. The memo, titled "Best Buy's Plan for the Windows 7 Launch", was recently distributed to Best Buy store managers and technical support personnel. In it, Best Buy execs tout the advantages of Windows 7 over Vista. "This new operating system isn't just a 'Vista that works' program—it's a new operating system with improved productivity, functionality and creativity that uses less computer resources," the memo states.

20 Years Ago Today: Birth of the Dot-Com Era

By David Coursey, Monday, June 08, 2009

It doesn't seem like it, but 20 years ago today, the dot-com era was born. On June 8, 1989, Brad Templeton, started Clarinet.com, an online newspaper business that many consider to be the company that started it all. "ClariNet was the first company created to use the internet as its platform for business, and as such this event has a claim at being the birth of the 'dot-com' concept which so affected the world in the two intervening decades.," said Templeton, who for many years has been president and chairman of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. His electronic newspaper, which consisted of wire service stories and other content, was delivered using the USENET protocol, there being no HTTP until inventor Tim Berners-Lee launched it in late 1990.

Asus graphics reach QuadHD

Computex 09 High-end video resolution
By Nebojsa Novakovic Monday, 8 June 2009

HOW TO SELL the highest end - and correspondingly highest price - graphics cards in today's market? Well, antialiasing, textures and effects might not be enough to justify spending the extra dosh. How about the real thing, many more pixels to load those GPUs further? After all, much higher resolution not only enables you to watch the upcoming "beyond HD" video content, but also better fonts in your documents, larger spreadsheets and multiple web pages open at the same time. So the Asus graphics girl, Michelle Chen, put together a lovely display where twin Asus Mars dual-GTX285 cards - yes, the grand total of quad-SLI GTX285, a four GPU combo in two slots - drove a biiiig 56-inch ChiMei 3840x2160, 16:9 aspect ratio QuadHD display. The eight megapixel (or as Jen-Hsun at Nvidia would call it, XHD2) resolution is still a bit less than the six-year old 22-inch IBM T221 3840x2400 16:10 Golden Ratio monitor, which is ideal for any kind of usage, but it's a big step forward, especially as games can now make more use of such high resolutions.
