With a new 40-nanometer manufacturing process behind it, AMD announced the ATI Radeon HD 4770 3D graphics chip this morning. Available now on 3D cards starting at $109 (before a $10 online rebate), the Radeon HD 4770 is the first 3D chip built on the 40-nanometer process, which allows for faster, more power-efficient hardware than AMD's previous 55nm chips. The various enthusiast review sites found the 512MB Radeon HD 4770 fast enough to play most current games at lower resolutions and image quality settings. Think 1,680 x 1,050 or lower and with little-to-no anti-aliasing. The Radeon HD 4770 also outpaced Nvidia's $95 GeForce 9800 GT on almost every test, and competed well with the approximately $130 Geforce 250 GTS (aka the GeForce 9800 GTX+). Its power consumption seems to stand out mostly under load, but its idle results showed little benefit.

US-CERT issues vulnerability warning for Adobe Reader
By Aharon Etengoff, April 28, 2009
A new Adobe Reader vulnerability has reportedly been discovered. According to US-CERT (US Computer Emergency Readiness Team), the vulnerability is due to an error in the "getAnnots()" JavaScript function. "Exploitation of this vulnerability may allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code," warned a post on the US-CERT homepage. The post also recommended disabling JavaScript in Adobe Reader to help "mitigate" the risk. Adobe confirmed that it was aware of the new "getAnnots()" report. "We are currently investigating, and will have an update once we get more information," Adobe said on its blog. It should be noted that F-Secure's chief research officer, Mikko Hypponen, recently recommended that users uninstall Adobe Reader in favor of a more secure PDF viewer. Hypponen explained that at least six vulnerabilities targeting Adobe's PDF reader have been found.

Microsoft To Embrace And Extend Twitter, Facebook
by Kevin McLaughlin April 28, 2009
Microsoft has launched an invitation-only beta of a social networking tool that lets families and friends stay in touch during emergencies and other situations that require immediate, realtime contact. Called Vine, the service lets users send and receive alerts to and from their contacts within a specific geographical area, and displays up-to-date status information through a graphical dashboard. Vine users can access the dashboard from PCs and mobile devices, and they can receive alerts via text message or e-mail. "Microsoft Vine aims to create an inclusive network so that ultimately anyone can participate through a social networking application such as Twitter or Facebook or using e-mail, any computer connected to the Internet or a mobile phone, kitchen phone or a special needs device," according to the Microsoft Vine fact sheet.
