Nothing new in chipsets this time
By Charlie Demerjian Thursday, 23 April 2009
NVIDIA HAD SUCK, I mean such startling success conning users into thinking the GTS250 was something new that they are doing it to the chipsets. Yes, the Nvidia 780a just gained 200! We told you about this moronic plan in early February, long before the GTS250 fiasco, and now they have hit the shelves. Yup, Nvidia did it, they slimed out another renamed product, just like we said. Differences this time? Nothing as far as we can tell, they just flashed the BIOS, redid the chip markings, and added 200. Ironically, 200 is the series that the new, really, we mean it, honestly, please believe us, please please please, G92 renamings are using. What coincidence. So, basically, the new 200 better 780a parts are out, and these don't even support DDR3. Talk about a day late and a dollar short, but never forget, they are 200 better, just ask Nvidia.

Don't try this at home: AMD overclocks new Phenom II X4 to 7 GHz
By Eric Lai April 23, 2009
Advanced Micro Devices on Thursday introduced the latest member of its Phenom II X4 family of high-performance quad-core CPUs, which the No. 2 chip maker said it had run as fast as 7 GHz in extreme overclocking tests. Out of the box, the new X4 955 Black Edition, which is aimed at gamers and hobbyists, runs at 3.2 GHz, giving it similar performance to Intel's fastest desktop chips at lower cost, AMD says. However, AMD was able to more than double the CPU's speed during its tests, said Brent Barry, an AMD product manager. The Web site Ripping.org notes that hobbyists with early access to the X4 955 chip have been able to clock it at up to 6.7 GHz. At the International CES in January, AMD demonstrated its then top-of-the-line X4 940 running at 6.5 GHz. (Watch the YouTube video.) Key to achieving such speeds is the use of exotic cooling materials, primarily liquid nitrogen and liquid helium.

Microsoft net income tumbles over 30% are layoffs ahead?
By Angela Gunn Published April 23, 2009
For the company's fiscal third quarter ended on March 31, Microsoft on Thursday is unveiling some highly unattractive numbers, including a net-income drop of 32% and an EPS decline of 30%, to 33 cents per share (in GAAP earnings; non-GAAP earnings weighed in at 39 cents/share, precisely as had been predicted). Revenues for the quarter were $13.65 billion, a decrease year-to-year of 6%; net income was up by 3%, to $4.44 billion. As the company prepped for its 2:30pm EDT phone call, a skim of the earnings-report press release reveals that compared to the third quarter of last year, the Online Services and Entertainment and Devices divisions had a rotten few months, with operating-income losses of $575 million and $31 million respectively. Online Services has a history of bleeding out -- they lost $226 million this time last year -- but the folks who bring you the Xbox 360 and other amusements are normally profitable, showing $106 million in operating income a year ago.
