Apple has been sued by the mother of a 15-year-old boy who said his 16GB iPod Touch exploded in his pants pocket, burning his leg. Ars Technica spotted the case, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. Apparently one day in class the boy "heard a loud pop and immediately felt a burning sensation in his leg," according to a copy of the complaint. (Click here for a PDF copy.) According to the complaint, the boy "realized his Apple iTouch (sic) had exploded and caught on fire in his pocket. ....Plaintiff A. V. immediately ran to the bathroom and took off his burning pants with the assistance of a friend. The Apple iTouch had burned through Plaintiff A. V.'s pants pocket and melted through his Nylon/Spandex underwear, burning his leg." The plaintiff suffered second-degree burns as a result of the explosion, according to the complaint, and is seeking in excess of $225,000 in compensatory and punitive damages. An Apple representative said the company does not comment on pending litigation.

IE8 Release Date Looks Like March 20
by Mark Edward Soper 03/13/09
The Taipei Times reports that the Taiwanese edition of Internet Explorer 8 will be released next Friday, March 20. The Times interviewed several Microsoft Taiwan personnel, including GM Davis Tsai and platform marketing manager Juno Su, for the story. So, what does this mean for IE8 in other markets? It's unlikely Redmond would launch the newest version of its browser in only one market on March 20, but if you're still skeptical, take a look at Neowin.net's collection of About IE screen shots gathered from recent Windows 7 builds (7048 and 7057) - there's no mention of IE8 being a Release Candidate or beta as with the IE8 version included in the Windows 7 public beta. Neowin suggests that the most likely venue for the formal roll-out will be next week's Microsoft MixO9 Web Development and Design Conference in Las Vegas.

VIA Unveils New Netbook Media Processor
By Shane McGlaun - March 12, 2009
VIA announces new netbook media processor that decodes full 1080p HD video. Among the biggest wishes netbook users have for improvements are more performance and the ability to play HD video. The first crop of netbooks that features the Intel Atom N270 lacked the capability for hardware 1080p video decoding. The Intel Atom N280 and its chipset can support 720p hardware decoding for HD video. NVIDIA announced its Ion platform that uses an Intel Atom CPU bundled with one of its GPUs to decode full 1080p video, but at this time no Ion netbooks have hit market. VIA has announced a new Media System Processor (MSP) today called the VX855 that offers among its features the ability to decode full 1080p video. VIA says that the processor supports multiple video standards including H.264, MPEG-2/4, DivX and WMV9 and can play the formats in high bit rates in 1080p resolution.
