Could Intel stop Nvidia from producing chips for Nehalem?

by Scott M. Fulton, III February 18, 2009

In a court filing Monday in Delaware which remains under seal, CPU maker Intel asked for a declaratory judgment against GPU and chipset producer Nvidia, stating that the terms of the companies' existing x86 technology license do not extend to the Nehalem generation. This according to Intel spokesperson Chuck Mulloy, who confirmed the filing with Betanews this morning. Nehalem is the first architecture from Intel to use an embedded memory controller, which it calls QuickPath Interconnect (QPI); AMD has had a similar technology called HyperTransport for several years. That QPI radically changes the way graphics processors and motherboard chipsets -- the two key products Nvidia makes -- communicate with the CPU. In order for Nvidia to utilize some of its own key technologies, including its multi-GPU system called SLI, system builders believe Nvidia would need to make -- or to have already made -- radical changes in its own designs. In a July announcement, according to The Register, Nvidia indicated that it had already done so, and that Nehalem support was on its way. Intel's response has been negative toward that ever since, and it has just formalized that response in court.

HTC Magic is official, bringing Android to Vodafone sans keyboard

by Paul Miller, posted Feb 17th 2009

Vodafone just scooped planet Earth with the first touchscreen-only Android phone: HTC's Magic. All the specs look to line up with what was rumored, with a 3.2-inch QVGA screen front and center (that resolution might be a typo, HVGA seems more likely), HDSPA, GPS, 3.2 megapixel camera (no flash), and a G1-style trackball. Details on pricing and availability will be unveiled for local Vodafone markets as they see fit, but pricing in Spain will be from 99 to 199 Euro, depending on contract. Initial markets to nab the phone will be UK (due in April), Spain, Germany, France and Italy, with more countries to follow, and the phone will be a timed exclusive with Vodafone. Crazily enough, the phone has a proprietary headphone jack, proving once and for all that HTC doesn't like you, but at least this one will ship with a touchscreen keyboard out of the gate -- it's running Cupcake.

Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 Days Away From Clinching Top Spot

by btarunr Feb.18, 2009

ASUS chose last month's CES event to announce its flagship gaming notebook, the W90. Usual high-end specifications aside, the most distinct component used in it is the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2, AMD's flagship mobile graphics platform, which is on the brink of snatching the performance crown away from NVIDIA for the platform. A North American sales representative for ASUS tells GPU Café that the W90 will be available from February 23, which perhaps makes it the launch-date for the Mobility HD 4870 X2. It is also noted that the Mobility HD 4670 will be out around the same time, while Mobility HD 4850 will arrive a week or two later.

Skype software to be included on some Nokia products, starting with upcoming N97 smart phone

By RACHEL METZ Feb 18, 2008

Skype's software for making free and cheap phone calls over the Internet will be built in to some Nokia Corp. smart phones. In a move announced this week at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, the companies said Skype will be initially integrated with Nokia's Nseries devices, which run on Nokia's Symbian S60 operating system. The integration will start with the N97, which will be released in June. A U.S. carrier for the phone has not been announced. The built-in Skype application will be integrated with the phone's address book, so users can see when their Skype contacts are available and make free voice calls or send instant messages to them. As with other Skype applications, users will also be able to pay to make voice calls through Skype to cell phone or landline numbers. The application will be able to run over both high-speed 3G cellular data networks and over Wi-Fi wireless connections to the Internet.
