AMD share of motherboard channel market expected to climb back to 30% in 1H09

With AMD's new 45nm Phenom II processor boosting demand for the AMD platform, motherboard makers expect AMD's share of the motherboard channel market will go back up to 30% in the first half of 2009, according to industry sources. Since AMD-based motherboards support all AMD CPU lines, allowing users to replace CPUs without changing other components, the AMD platform is attractive to consumers in terms of price/performance ratio, noted the sources with motherboard makers. Although AM3-based motherboard has already appeared in the channel, the high prices of DDR3 memory modules are limiting its growth, the sources said. Therefore AM2+-based motherboard currently is still the mainstream product for AMD, the sources added.

Apple fixes dozens of holes with OS X security update

Apple released a Mac OS X security update on Thursday that contains fixes for more than two dozen vulnerabilities, including one in Safari RSS that could lead to arbitrary code execution and one in Remote Apple Events that could disclose sensitive information. Also fixed are a vulnerability in AFP Server that could trigger a denial of service and vulnerabilities in Apple Pixlet Video, ClamAV, CoreText, Python, SMB, and X11 that could lead to arbitrary code execution. Another fix closes a hole in Printing that could allow a local user to get system privileges and one in DS Tools that could expose passwords to other local users. Security Update 2009-001 can be obtained from the Software Update pane in System Preferences or Apple's Software Downloads Web site.

Microsoft to Open Its Own Retail Stores

In its next step to connect with consumers, Microsoft will open a number of stores in select markets. Microsoft announced plans to open its own retail stores in an effort to connect with customers and better compete with the extremely popular stores from Apple. "The purpose of opening these stores is to create deeper engagement with consumers and continue to learn firsthand about what they want and how they buy," Microsoft said in a statement on its website. The company also said it has selected David Porter, former DreamWorks animation global product distribution manager, to serve as corporate vice president for the retail stores. Prior to his stint at DreamWorks, Porter also served as in store ops, merchandising and IT of Walmart for more than 25 years.
