AMD-Dell courtship appears to be back on again

Marketers at Advanced Micro Devices Inc. watch a lot of numbers, but one that has caught their attention lately is 546. That's the model number for the new Dell Inc. desktop computer that occupies prime real estate on the computer maker's e-commerce Web site. The 546 is the first mainstream desktop model featuring AMD processors that Dell has highlighted on its Web site in 18 months. Its appearance could signal a shift in the ongoing relationship between Dell and AMD, which has gone through warm and cold spells in recent years. Dell, which always has been mindful of its long-standing close ties to AMD rival Intel Corp., didn't have much to say about the latest development. "Today's digital lifestyle revolves around video, music, photos and the capability to share those personal experiences," said John Terwilliger, Dell's director of consumer desktops. "AMD technology helps us deliver a great multimedia experience at a great price." From AMD's point of view, Dell's move to prominently promote an AMD-based computer represents an acknowledgement that the chipmaker can deliver both the processors and the graphics chips that appeal to consumers who want good multimedia performance at an affordable cost.
