Amazon says 2008 holiday season was 'best ever,' a rare bright spot, even for online commerce

By KRISTEN A. LEE Dec 26, 2008

Online retailer Amazon.com Inc. called this holiday season its "best ever," saying Friday that it saw a 17 percent increase in orders on its busiest day - a rare piece of good news in a season that has been far from merry for most retailers, including online businesses. Amazon customers ordered more than 6.3 million items on Dec. 15, compared with roughly 5.4 million on its peak day last year, the company said. It shipped more than 5.6 million products on its best day, a 44 percent surge over 2007, when it shipped about 3.9 million on its busiest day. Amazon's best-sellers included the Nintendo Wii game console, Samsung's 52-inch LCD HDTV and Apple Inc.'s iPod touch. Analysts agreed Amazon's report was good news for the online shopping giant, but they were divided over whether the results indicate strength in online commerce in general. Forrester Research analyst Sucharita Mulpuru said Amazon's experience shows the current economy is favoring discount retailers, both online and offline. "The Amazon story doesn't surprise me because Amazon has always traditionally been a leader on price, and they're one of the first places consumers go when they're looking for things online," Mulpuru said. "In many ways they're like the Wal-Mart of the online world."

Nvidia recommends not buying its defective chips

Bumpgate Told ya so
By Charlie Demerjian Friday, 26 December 2008

IT LOOKS LIKE Nvidia finally has a solution to the defective chips fiasco that it keeps covering up. The short story according to documents seen by VR-Zone is to not buy them, just buy the newer ones. No, really, we're not kidding. To quote some of the latest memo, ".....NVIDIA strongly recommends that customers transition to this latest revision of the NB8E-SET GPUs as soon as possible. These latest revision units utilize "Hitachi" underfill packaging material that improves product quality and enhances operating life by improved thermal cycling reliability." We know what you are thinking, there is no problem with the chips, they said so. Many times. With a straight face. Then again, we did say we believed otherwise. And then Nvidia denied it. And so we printed copies of the technical docs on the problem that we saw, note the part about Hitachi underfill and the date. And once again Nvidia denied it. We publicly mocked them, and so Nvidia spun harder. Whee, look! The shreds of the company's credibility are twitching!

Video Game Industry Proves Recession Proof Thanks to Sequels

Video games continue to sell well despite poor global economy
By Shane McGlaun - December 26, 2008

People not into video games and outside the industry may think of the video gamer as a younger teen or tween living at home with mom and dad. The reality is that the modern average gamer is a 35-year-old person with a significant disposable income who has played games since youth. Home prices have dropped, credit cards are tanking, but despite the failing industries and the poor economy, the video game industry has marched on unfazed. Much of the continued growth and sales in the video game industry have been on the backs of some top-tier sequel titles that have launched in 2008. A couple of the standout hits have been from the music game genre. According to Reuters, Rock Band 2 and the numerous sequels to the ever-popular Guitar Hero franchise have continued to attract hard-core and casual gamers alike, a key statistic in the growth of the two titles.
