Apple Thursday acknowledged that some users have had problems updating their Macs to the newest version of Leopard, Mac OS X 10.5.6. In a typically terse note on its support site, Apple confirmed that the update may hang during the installation process. "When attempting to update software using Software Update in Mac OS X 10.5, the update process may stop responding while 'Configuring installation' is visible in the update window," said Apple. Mac OS X 10.5.6, which included nearly 40 improvements and application fixes, was released Monday. Prominent among the changes was one that increased the frequency of background synchronization between Macs and Apple's MobileMe online service. Apple pinned responsibility for the glitch on updates that were "only partially downloaded," but offered no other explanation, including whether the fault was on its end, in the update tool, or due to user action.

Report: Samsung readying Android phone
by Jonathan Skillings December 19, 2008
The latest to line up with word of an entry into the Android phone sweepstakes: Samsung Electronics. Korea IT News reports that the electronics giant plans to offer a phone based on Google's Android operating system in the second quarter of 2009. The device will be released in North America through Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile USA, according to the report. "To this end," the report says, Samsung "has added 30 experts in Linux and Java to the task force team of its information and communications division." T-Mobile was the first carrier to offer an Android-based phone, the G1, which went on sale earlier this fall. The Samsung device is expected to be a "full touch-screen phone" and will include "the Google Map-based location information service, messenger G-Talk, the G-mail application and Google Search," according to Korea IT News.

YouTube offers videos in HD
By Tim Conneally, December 19, 2008
Google's popular video site YouTube yesterday unveiled a dedicated HD section for US users to watch videos in 720p high definition. When a video's source upload supports higher resolution, YouTube will have a "watch it in HD" button below the player's lower right hand corner in the space where some videos had the "watch it in high quality" button. Clicking this button expands the standard viewing window to 16 x 9 with a 1280 x 720 resolution. YouTube recommends that users who wish to have their content available in HD pay close attention to the file's aspect ratio. The new widescreen player will automatically add "pillarbox" bars to 4:3 videos, so if a video was already letterboxed to fit the 4:3 window, it will be doubly resized, and will create a "bad viewing experience."
