IT SEEMS INTEL’S new Core i7 chip may be a bit soggy on the translation lookaside buffer (TLB) front, with the firm hinting at a bug in an official Specification Update. A TLB, found in pretty much all current desktop and server processors, is a CPU cache used by memory management hardware to improve the speed of virtual address translation. Chipzilla’s spec update notes "In rare instances, improper TLB invalidation may result in unpredictable system behavior, such as system hangs or incorrect data". The document goes on to say "Developers of operating systems should take this documentation into account when designing TLB invalidation algorithms. For the processors affected, Intel has provided a recommended update to system and BIOS vendors to incorporate into their BIOS to resolve this issue."

Windows Live gets its social makeover
by Ina Fried December 2, 2008
Microsoft has started to roll out a series of changes, outlined in November, that give Windows Live a more social networking-like feel. Windows Live staples such as Spaces, Events, and the home page get a new look, while Microsoft is also putting special emphasis on group, profile, and photo pages. "Essentially we're launching 'the new face of Windows Live' on the web today," Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc said in a blog posting. The changes, which are being rolled out over the next 24 hours, also include a bump in the limit for Microsoft's SkyDrive online storage, which now offers 25GB of storage and improved photo slide shows on the Web. Also new is the ability to import contacts directly from Facebook to Windows Live.
