On Tuesday, Microsoft will release the second version of Silverlight, its answer to Adobe's Flash technology, Microsoft said Monday. For those users with Silverlight already installed, the upgrade process should be seamless, as Silverlight will automatically update itself over the short term. Silverlight 2.0 offers changes for both the developer and the user. Probably the thing that leapt out at me was the addition of Silverlight DRM, powered by Microsoft's own PlayReady digital-rights-management software, which offers "robust content protection for connected Silverlight experiences". In the past, those connected Silverlight experiences have included Olympics coverage on NBCOlympics.com, which included 70 million video streams viewed by 50 million unique people, according to Microsoft. Microsoft also claimed that CBS College Sports, Blockbuster, Hard Rock Cafe, Yahoo Japan, AOL, Toyota, HSN and Tencent are building "their next-generation experiences" on Silverlight.

ATI And Nvidia Investigation Closed
By Davie Barret, October 13th 2008
AMD, Advanced Micro Devices, announced on Monday that the Department Of Justice has closed the investigation of ATI and Nvidia and that no action was taken. The investigation lasted two years and the two major video chip manufacturers were being suspected of conspiring to create a monopoly in the graphic cards market. The antitrust regulators put ATI and Nvidia under investigation just as AMD bought ATI and just as Nvidia released its GeForce 8800 graphics card. At the time, AMD acquired ATI for the price of $5, 4 billion and by doing so it has acquired one of the strongest and most popular video chip manufacturers out there. On December 1, 2006 AMD and Nvidia were issued subpoenas as part of a probe into possible anticompetitive practices within the "graphics processing unit and cards" industry. The investigaton was launched after DoJ received several complaints that AMD and Nvidia conspired to fix, raise, maintain, or stabilize the prices of graphics processing units and cards in violation of federal antitrust law and/or state antitrust law.

Review of final OpenOffice 3: Why buy Microsoft Office?
By Preston Gralla October 13, 2008
The final version of OpenOffice 3 is out today, and if you're looking to save yourself plenty of money, download it instead of buying Microsoft Office --- you could save yourself hundreds of dollars, and not lose out on many features. I put the Windows version through its paces, and am about to download the Linux version as well. The suite has six full-blown applications: the Writer word processor, Calc spreadsheet, Impress presentations program, Base database program, Math equation editor, and Draw graphics program. Given that the full suite is free, this is one of the best deals you'll find in all of computing. It'll do just about anything you expect from an office suite, whether creating documents, spreadsheets, or presentations. You'll find solid formatting tools, as well as extras including mail merge, macros, charting capabilities, and more.
