During Ceatec in Japan this past week, ATI said that it expects to see DirectX 11 GPUs based on a 40 nm manufacturing tech sometime next year. DX11 is expected to bring several substantial advancements over DX10, including the introduction of Shader Model 5.0, as well as GPGPU support and multithreading support, both of which are essential for the graphics industry and the myriad of multi-core graphics cards that exist today. Also, hardware tessellation will be supported by DX11. Hardware tessellation has been supported by ATI cards going back to the 2000 series, but has never been popular with PC game developers. Tessellation, which allows for a low-polygon model to see a real-time increase in polygon density with minimal performance loss, was part of the GPU ATI designed for the Xbox 360, and with DX11, may finally be a feature utilized by PC game developers. While DX11 is expected to improve visuals over DX10, according to Ars Technica, the bulk of improvement is reserved for "...improving GPU computational capabilities and efficiency in a variety of environments." Now that the software will be in place, we may see the GPGPU become a widespread trend.

Asus admits Eee Box mini PC shipped with virus
By Tony Smith 8th October 2008
Asus has admitted that some of the its Eee Box desktop mini PCs have shipped with a virus. But while the company has only admitted the infection was present in machines shipped to Japan, Register Hardware can confirm that other territories may be affected too. According to an email sent out by Asus, PC Advisor reports, the Eee Box's 80GB hard drive has the recycled.exe virus files hidden in the drive's D: partition. When the drive is opened, the virus activates and attempts to infect the C: drive and an removable drives connected to the system. According to Symantec, the malware is likely to be the W32/Usbalex worm, which creates an autorun.inf file to trigger recycled.exe from D:. Separately, we've been testing the Eee Box this week, and discovered our review unit came loaded with the W32/Taterf worm - aka W32.Gammima.AG, aka kavo.exe malware that sniffs out online gaming usernames and passwords.

Ipod doomed says Wozniak
It is just a fad
By Nick Farrell: Wednesday, 08 October 2008
APPLE FOUNDER Steve Wozniak has launched a stinging attack on the Ipod claiming that the gizmo was just another fad doomed to go the way of the Walkman and the hula-hoop. He said that the Ipod has lived a long life at number one. But if you look back to transistor radios and Walkmans, they died out after a while. "When everyone has got one or two or three, they are on display everywhere, they get real cheap and don't sell as much", he said. Woz also said that both Steve Jobs and him hated Apple fanboys who are too stupid to question anything the company does and defend its failures. He said Steve and him hated the fact that Apple has become a bit of a religion. "Users influence the next generation and with a religion you're not allowed to challenge anything", he said.
