Windows XP gets another stay of execution

by Brad Linder Oct 3rd 2008

Windows XP, also known as the operating system that will not die, looks like it could be around a bit longer, making it just a bit more likely that you can upgrade directly from Windows XP to Windows 7 in a year or two and skip Windows Vista altogether.Microsoft instructed retailers to stop selling copies of the operating system to consumers this summer. But there's a loophole that lets customers purchasing new computers running certain versions of Windows Vista request a free downgrade to Windows XP. That option was set to expire on January 31st, 2009. Now Microsoft has extended that date through July 31st, 2009. That means you may not be able to pick up a standalone copy of Windows XP from your local computer store, but you will be able to get Windows XP with a new computer until the middle of next year.

Yahoo-Google deal delayed while talks with Justice Dept. continue

By The Seattle Times October 4, 2008

Yahoo and Google agreed to delay an Internet-advertising partnership while U.S. regulators investigate whether the deal will hurt competition. The companies agreed to a "brief" delay while discussions with the Justice Department continue, Yahoo and Google said Friday. Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt had said in August the partnership would start in early October. Microsoft has opposed the deal, saying it will give Google 90 percent of the search-based ad business. Microsoft spokesman Jack Evans declined to comment Friday. Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang, 39, chose the Google accord after rejecting Microsoft's takeover advances earlier this year. In August, investors withheld about one-third of their votes for Yang's re-election to the board to show their displeasure. Yahoo needs the Google agreement to offset the slowing online-ad market, said Ross Sandler, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets in New York.

Nvidia sticks new names on old cards, hopes no one will notice

Re-named and shamed
By Sylvie Barak: Friday, 03 October 2008

AS IF ITS OLD naming scheme wasn’t complex enough, Nvidia has gone and done it again, hoping that by adding a few more Gs 'n' T and Ss into the mix, it can make its old cards seem more appealing. Rumours of the Nvidia name shuffle have been floating around for a while now, but today a VR-Zone forum thread established that a file in the Forceware 178.15 beta graphics drivers did indeed have details about the changes. Apparently, the Nvidia_G92.DEV_0615.1 is to become Nvidia Geforce GTS 150, whilst Nvidia_G94.DEV_0626.1 becomes Nvidia Geforce GT 130 and Nvidia_G96.DEV_0646.1 magically transforms into Nvidia Geforce GT 120. The re-branding will reportedly apply to all 55nm GeForce 9-series cards although it remains unclear whether current cards will also get the peel-off-old-and-stick-on-new-name sticker treatment.
