ATI XGP allows Puma platform notebooks to game like desktops

ATI made another big announcement at Computex today of a new external video card platform for notebook computers called the ATI XGP (External Graphics Platform). The ATI XGP is an external PCI Express 2.0 graphics device. ATI says that the device is externally powered and externally cooled so it won’t place demands on the notebook. Bandwidth in both directions is reported to be 4 Gbytes/s; ATI says that other external graphics solutions were limited in bandwidth. The XGP platform is optimized to work with the new AMD Turion X2 Ultra notebook platforms that DailyTech reported on earlier today. Initially according to ATI, the XGP will use Radeon HD 3800 series graphics cards and the first units will utilize the Radeon HD 3870. When using the XGP with a notebook featuring integrated ATI graphics, CrossFireX is available to enhance performance further. The ATI XGP also provides additional USB 2.0 connectivity for attaching other USB devices like Blu-ray players and more.

Intel won't let Nvidia make Nehalem chipsets

Nvidia's Director or PR, Derek Perez, has told Fudzilla that Intel actually won't let Nvidia make its Nforce chipset that will work with Intel's Nehalem generation of processors.We confirmed this from Intel’s side, as well as other sources. Intel told us that there won't be an Nvidia's chipset for Nehalem. Nvidia will call this a „dispute between companies that they are trying to solve privately“ but we believe it's much more than that. We all know that Jensen, Nvidia’s CEO, officially stated that Intel stepped over the edge with its comments about Nvidia. Ever since Nvidia entered the chipset license with Intel, Graphzilla was concerned with Intel's history of competing, and they would be naive not to. If you are old enough, you will remember that Intel killed VIA’s Pentium chipset business even though VIA had a legitimate license. Intel was cool towards Nvidia until recently, up until the point when Intel realized that graphics card might be used for more than gaming and after Nvidia’s bold decision to keep SLI for itself. It was a tough decision to go against Intel but if Intel got the SLI for its X58 chipset or any previous Intel’s chipset, business will be good as dead, or things would get much tougher then they are. At this point Intel simply doesn’t want to honour its commitments toward the chipset license deal.

NVIDIA Launches GeForce 9M Series Notebook GPUs
NVIDIA announces GeForce 9M, takes subtle jabs at Intel

NVIDIA is looking to up the ante in the realm of notebook GPUs with its new GeForce 9M series. NVIDIA is banking on both power and efficiency to win over OEMs and end-users with the new GPUs. NVIDIA claims that the new GeForce 9M GPUs are up to 40% faster than the previous generation GeForce 8M parts and as much as ten times faster than a certain chip giant's "generic" integrated GPUs -- namely, Intel. All of the new GPUs incorporate PureVideo HD and support DVI, HDMI 1.3, DisplayPort 1.1, and Blu-ray Profile 2.0. All GeForce 9M GPUs comply with the MXM 3.0 graphics module specification. On other feature to consider with the GeForce 9M is the inclusion of Hybrid SLI technology. This allows OEMs to incorporate a low-power GPU for everyday desktop duties and a higher-performing part for graphics-intensive duties -- NVIDIA SLI support may be added at a later date.
