According to ZDNet.de, Intel Germany CEO Hannes Schwaderer confirmed that Apple would be using the Intel Atom processor in a future version of the iPhone. The new model will reportedly be a larger model with a larger display, correlating with circulating rumors about a mini-tablet (720x480) device rumored to be coming from Apple. English translation: As part of an Intel event for the 40th birthday of the semiconductor company at Munich’s BMW World, Germany managing director Hannes Schwaderer confirmed today what has long been a rumor on the Internet: namely, that there is an iPhone with Intel’s new Atom chip. The device is slightly larger than the current version, Schwaderer said. That is not, however, because of the Intel chip, but because of the larger display used in the new iPhone.

Gigabyte starts PR war against Asus
by Thomas De Maesschalck Wednesday, May 14 2008
Gigabyte just started a PR war against Asus. Tom's Hardware talked to Gigabyte's technical team in Taiwan and received a bunch of slides in which the motherboard maker shows how Asus supposedly lies and deceives its customers. Gigabyte claims Asus lies about the power savings of its EPU technology, shows the superiority of its own DES technology, says Asus' EPU doesn't have phase changing capabilities and calls out Asus for using "questionable components" on its motherboards. When the slides were shown, the message from Gigabyte’s technical team was obvious: Asus outright lied about its performance figures.

IBM springs to life, denies death of x86 line
Makes Chile con carne (or mincemeat) of rumours
By Sylvie Barak: Wednesday, 14 May 2008
AFTER CHASING IBM for the best part of the day trying to get the firm to comment on rumours that the company would be discontinuing its x86 servers we finally got a resposne as soon as we published the article. According to Vineeta Durani, global communications manager for system X servers, the rumours of the X86’s impending doom were “100 per cent inaccurate” and “definitely false”. Durani noted that the “x86 market segment is an important component of IBM’s portfolio”, and pointed to a recent deal with Lenovo in January of this year to sell x86 servers specifically aimed at the small business market.

VIA EPIA PX500EG Pico ITX doesn't need a fan
by Thomas De Maesschalck Wednesday, May 14 2008
VIA today unveiled a new power efficient motherboard. The VIA EPIA PX500EG is a Pico-ITX board with a 500MHz VIA Eden ULV processor that uses only 1W. The motherboard is really small, it measures just 10cm x 7.2cm (3.9" x 2.8"), and doesn't need active cooling because it generates little heat. Building on the success of the VIA EPIA PX10000 Pico-ITX board, which took the embedded industry by storm last year as the world's smallest mass production x86 board ever, the VIA EPIA PX5000EG adds the incredible heat and power efficiency of the 500MHz VIA Eden ULV processor with its maximum power draw of just one watt. System designers of embedded automation and industrial control devices can now take advantage of a full x86 system that fits neatly into the most extreme space constrained, heat sensitive environments.
