It's not often wireless music streaming comes as easily as AudioEngine's AW1 makes it. Open the box, plug the transmitter and receiver in, select a track and press play. Audio across the room in...oh, under a minute. The AW1 pack comprises two almost identical units: the rocket-iconed transmitter and the planet-themed receiver. Geddit?!?! They're both shiny black lozenges about the size of a box of matches with a standard-sized USB port at one end on a 1cm lead. AudioEngine also supplies a single, USB-ported AC adaptor and a trio of audio cables: two with a 3.5mm jack at either end, and a third that runs connects a 3.5mm jack to a pair of RCA stereo sockets. There's an instruction sheet too, but we figure that, being Register readers, you won't reach for that yet. We plugged the transmitter into a MacBook Pro and selected it as the machine's sound output in Mac OS X's Sound System Preferences pane. You'd do much the same with a Windows box. We plugged the receiver into the AC adaptor and cabled it to a pair of Logitech powered speakers. And, as we say, within 60 seconds of opening the box we had a variety of Bach cello concerti blasting out across the office, annoying more sensitively eared Vultures in the process.

Skype offers unlimited long-distance plan

Internet calling company Skype said on Monday that it would offer an unlimited long-distance calling service for customers who want to reach friends and family without computers or Internet access. Skype, owned by eBay, is one of the best-known Internet calling firms which allow free calls among Internet users. Users pay to call landlines and mobile phones, but the fee is often lower than standard long-distance services. The company said it was offering unlimited calls to landline and cell phones in the U.S. and Canada for $2.95 a month. It also offers unlimited calls to phones in 34 countries including Australia, China, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom, for $9.95 per month, it said.

AMD’s Radeon 4800 in production

Unlike the ATI that we knew before, it appears that AMD’s graphics division is running perfectly these days – and ahead of deadlines. Even though the graphics unit has posted an $8 million loss in the first quarter of this year – in an effort to improve market share rather than average selling prices - the graphics business is making progress: We hear the company has struck gold with the RV770 and will be bring the chip to market earlier than expected.AMD’s next graphics cards are being prepared for launch: During the Q1 earnings call, president and chief operating officer Dirk Meyer stated that the company will roll out a significant number of products in May and our sources now confirmed that the introductions will include desktop and mobile (M88) graphics parts.

AMD plans native Six-core, Istanbul

We've had a chance to see what is planned for late 2008 or early 2009 and we were not that surprised to see a six-core on the latest roadmap.Intel just announced its six-core Dunnington and in order to stay in the server / workstation game AMD has to have a competitor.The main difference between Dunnington and AMD's six-core codenamed Istanbul is that K10.5, 45nm-based Istanbul is native six-core, while Dunnington is three dual-core Penryns stitched together.
