Western Digital has bumped up the capacity of its two-platter SATA drives to 640GB, an increase of almost a third, and is planning more drives based on its latest 160/320GB disk technology. The new 640GB Caviar SE16 drive, which lists for £85 (US$170), follows on from a single-platter 320GB model. WD said that it offers a 3Gbit/s data transfer rate, spins at 7200 RPM, and has 16MB of cache memory. It might look like a 320 with an extra platter -- and indeed, the platters and heads are the same -- the 640GB drive is actually a separate product with some new parts, such as the motor, said Ted Deffenbaugh, WD's senior director of product marketing. He explained that single-platter drives are aimed at the entry level market, where "acoustics are critical", so they are tweaked to run almost silently at the expense of a little performance. Two and three-platter drives are "more performance-optimized, even though that means a bit more seek noise."

Used Electronics Get New Life as Credit Toward Update

Leave it to the gadget industry to turn concern over electronic waste into a sales opportunity. Simply put, they're offering to buy back old devices to recycle or resell, in return for cash or in-store credit. Coming to consumer electronic retailers nationwide this spring is the ecoNEW program from NEW Customer Service Cos., the company that provides extended warranty plans and protection programs for such retailers as Best Buy and Wal-Mart. Under the program, consumers can return any electronics products they own to participating retailers (which have not yet been announced) -- even if they weren't purchased at the store. In return they'll receive an in-store credit gift card for a predetermined amount based on the type and condition of the device. EcoNEW handles all the collection and evaluation details and issues the gift cards directly. Another company, TechForward, offers a guaranteed buyback program similar to the optional extended warranty services offered by many consumer electronic retail stores. But instead of buying extra coverage in case the product breaks, the consumer buys insurance of sorts against future upgrades.

Asus Splendid HD1 multimedia video card

Asus released a new video card for multimedia systems, the Splendid HD. The firm didn't really share a lot of information about this card but claims it will allow you to enjoy Full HD 1080p video and improve picture quality. Catering to the new era in multimedia technology, ASUS, producer of high quality audio and visual solutions, has announced the new ASUS Splendid HD1 video enhance card.
