In the battle for motherboard IGP (integrated graphics) supremacy, AMD, rumours say, has stepped up to the plate and has launched a DX10-compliant SKU – code-named 780G – that scores around 1,500 marks in 3DMark06’s default test. Now, NVIDIA is also coming to the DX10 IGP party with its GeForce 8200- and 8300-based motherboards, some time in April. However, NVIDIA is both later and slower than AMD. The upcoming MCP78-S scores around 1,100 marks and the MCP78-U around 1,250 marks, we have learned.

AMD has given PC Pro an exclusive briefing on its "Puma" mobile platform, destined to compete with Intel's Centrino. The new platform - which will be officially unveiled at CeBIT 2008 tomorrow - will be based around a revamped processor design, codenamed Griffin and making its debut in the new 65nm Turion X2 Ultra processor. Its main feature is a triple-powerplane design, allowing each of its two cores and the integrated north bridge to operate at different voltage and frequency for maximum power efficiency. Intel's Core 2 chips can't run with each core at different frequencies. The overall Puma platform is Centrino-like in its structure, consisting of a new 7-series chipset and the new processor. But whereas Intel completes the trio with its own wireless adaptor, AMD is making more of its ATi Mobility Radeon 3400-series graphics. A wireless 802.11g/n adaptor is part of the overall platform but these are provided by one of several third-party manufacturers.

By Jeff Smykil February 29, 2008While current browser share estimates for Apple's Safari web browser hover somewhere in the 4.5 percent range, Safari is attracting some unwanted attention from PayPal, the eBay-owned payment company. PayPal is urging its users to ditch Safari and instead use alternative browsers such as Internet Explorer 7, IE 8, Firefox 2, Firefox 3, or even Opera. The reason for the warning is Safari's lack of anti-phishing technology. Currently the Apple browser does not alert users to sites that could be phishing for your info, and it lacks support for Extended Validation. PayPal is, of course, a popular site among phishers in their neverending search for personal information, user IDs, and passwords.

Microsoft has some big plans for the small-sized storage devices. Microsoft is working on turning USB-based flash drives into a “Windows companion” — a new product known as “StartKey” — that will allow users to carry their Windows and Windows Live settings with them. StartKey isn’t just for USB sticks; it also will work on other flash-storage devices, like SD memory cards. Microsoft is looking to turn these intelligent storage devices portable “computing companions” for users in both developed and emerging markets, with availability (at least in beta form) likely before the end of this year, according to sources who asked not to be named. Microsoft’s goal is to build an end-to-end StartKey environment — comprised of everything from system software on the flash devices, a software development kit to enable third-party developers to create products that can leverage StartKey, and accompany Microsoft applications and services, sources said.
